Dandenong City Council resolves to adopt comprehensive position against Lyndhurst Prescribed Waste facility

RATWISE group at Greater Dandenong Council Meeting.

In 2007, the City Council of Greater Dandenong resolved to adopt a comprehensive position in relation to the Lyndhurst Prescribed Waste facility. Indeed, the Council's position encompassed the entire Lyndhurst Landfill Site.

Since that time, numerous aspects of the Council position have materialised, namely and principally,

  1. a Community Reference Group which has been established enabling community and Council representatives to meet frequently with regulators and landfill operators to discuss site issues;
  2. a Community Health Study which was undertaken bringing some clarity around local community health concerns relating to the site; and
  3. a public reporting of environmental indicators applying to the site enabling scrutiny by, and trasparency for, local communities

However, one key objective underpinning Council's position (that is, closure of the Prescribed Waste site) has not occurred nor is there any indication that this is likely at this time. With regard to the broader site, including the putrescible waste cells, a target closure date has now passed.

Community concerns remain and recently, a 'tip fire' at the site, albeit controlled without reported adverse objective, has heightened those concerns.

Council is progressing a revision of its 2007 position and while this will not retreat from the ultimate closure objective, it will be updated and informed by information learned and changes experienced since that time.

In the internim, and given that a State election will be held in November 2014, it is considered essential that major parties and candidates seeking election in seats in proximity to the Lyndhurst facility ought to outline their positions to all voters. That is, all members of communities with an interest in the site.

On the 24th of March, 2014, the Council of Greater Dandenong reaffirmed its long held objective that the Lyndhurst Landfill Facility and, in particular, the Prescribed Waste Facility, be closed at the earliest possible date.
